CLEANING & CARE FOR YOUR MOTORCYCLE
Let’s be honest: when the paint shines in the sun and everything reflects in the chrome, a biker’s heart beats a little faster. A clean motorcycle is not only a pleasure to look at, it also plays a crucial role in keeping your bike reliable and safe for many years. Regular motorcycle care protects against wear, preserves its value and, at the same time, increases your riding enjoyment.
In this guide, you will learn step by step how to clean your motorcycle properly, which care products make sense and what you should pay attention to.
« Motorcycle care is more than just looks: it protects the mechanics, preserves value and ensures safe rides. »
Washing your motorcycle – but in an environmentally responsible way
Before you start, it is important to know where washing is actually permitted. Small jobs such as wiping dust from the paint or briefly polishing chrome parts are usually no problem. However, for a thorough motorcycle wash, caution is required, as oil residues, brake dust, rubber particles and other contaminants are released and must not end up in the drainage system.
The best option is a motorcycle washing bay at a petrol station. These are designed for bikes and are equipped with oil separators and proper wastewater disposal. Larger cleaning jobs on private property or on public roads are not permitted without appropriate protective measures.
Cleaning your motorcycle – step by step
After a long ride, dirt, insects and brake dust collect on many parts of the motorcycle. Before you start cleaning, let the bike cool down completely and avoid washing it in direct sunlight. Hot surfaces can cause cleaning products to dry too quickly and leave unsightly marks.
1. Pre-treatment: loosening stubborn dirt
A motorcycle is made of different materials such as paint, plastic, chrome and aluminium, which react differently to cleaning agents. Heavily soiled areas such as the wheels, engine or swingarm are best treated with a special motorcycle cleaner. Spray it on and leave it to work only for as long as recommended by the manufacturer so that it loosens the dirt without attacking the surfaces.
If the motorcycle is only lightly soiled, a bucket of water with a little washing-up liquid is often enough for basic cleaning.
2. Gentle hand wash with sponge and water
With a soft sponge and plenty of water, many types of dirt can be removed gently. Work without applying much pressure to avoid damaging the sensitive paint. Always clean from top to bottom so that dirt is not dragged over areas that are already clean. This method is particularly kind to the paint and ideal for regular care.
3. Special cleaners for problem areas
If insect remains, grease or dirt have settled in cooling fins, corners or around the headlight, special cleaning products will help. There are insect removers, wheel cleaners and suitable cleaning brushes for these problem areas, allowing you to reach even hard-to-access spots. However, brushes should not be used on painted or chromed surfaces, as they can cause scratches.
Cleaning is also a good opportunity for a quick technical check. When cleaning the wheels, for example, it is worth taking a closer look at the brake discs, as heavy wear can be detected early.
4. Rinsing – thorough but gentle
After the cleaning agents have taken effect, rinse the motorcycle thoroughly with clean water. It is important to remove all residues completely, as even mild cleaners can cause stains or dull patches if left on for too long. Avoid using high-pressure water directly on bearings, seals or electrical components to prevent damage.
5. Drying with a chamois – preventing water spots
If the motorcycle were simply left to dry, unsightly water spots would remain on paint and metal. Using a clean chamois cloth helps to avoid this. The cloth absorbs the water gently and leaves a streak-free finish. Once the chamois is saturated, rinse it briefly with clean water, wring it out and continue.
6. Paint care – shine and protection for the surface
Airborne dust, environmental influences and UV radiation gradually dull the paint. With a high-quality paint care product, the shine can be refreshed and a protective film applied at the same time. After a short application time, this film is usually wiped off with a microfibre cloth, giving the paint visible depth.
Fine scratches, which are almost unavoidable over time, can be reduced with a special polish. Always work on small areas and preferably in straight lines, as circular movements can stress the paint more. Milky polishes are not suitable for rough plastic parts, as they can leave white residue.
7. Plastic care with long-lasting effect
In addition to painted surfaces, a motorcycle has many unpainted plastic parts that are constantly exposed to the elements. UV radiation in particular causes plastics to fade or yellow over time. Special plastic care products protect against these signs of ageing, refresh the colour and create a protective film that keeps the material looking good for longer.
8. Caring for chrome and aluminium
Chrome parts such as exhaust systems or trim only look elegant when they are clean and well maintained. With a special chrome polish, dull or tarnished areas can be restored. It is also worth checking the fork stanchions, as dirt can damage the seals during compression.
Raw or polished aluminium showing signs of ageing can be brought back to a shine with an aluminium polish. After a short application time, the product is buffed off and the aluminium looks almost like new.
9. Cleaning and lubricating the chain
If the drive chain is heavily soiled, a special chain cleaner is recommended. Spray it on, leave it to work briefly and then remove it with a chain brush. Make sure that the cleaner does not come into contact with the wheels or tyres if possible.
Once the chain is completely dry, lubricate it with a suitable chain spray, ideally applied thinly to the inside of the chain. If any grease or cleaner gets onto the tyres or rims, remove it with brake cleaner. Only ride again once the cleaner has completely evaporated.
Conclusion: a well-maintained bike rides better
Regular motorcycle care is not just for looks, but an investment in safety, value retention and riding enjoyment. Those who keep their bike clean and well maintained are rewarded not only with a gleaming appearance, but also with a reliable motorcycle that brings long-lasting pleasure.
