CLEANING & CARING FOR YOUR HELMET
Regular cleaning and care of your motorcycle helmet are essential for comfort, hygiene and, above all, your safety. Sweat, dust, insect remains and pollen build up quickly and can not only cause unpleasant odours, but also affect your visibility and the protective performance of your helmet. A clean helmet also lasts much longer. The good news: helmet cleaning is simple and can be done in just a few easy steps.
« Your helmet is your most important piece of protective equipment – give it the care it deserves. »
Step 1: Remove the visor
First, remove the visor. Depending on the helmet model, this is done via a simple click system or with an Allen key. If your helmet is fitted with a Pinlock lens, place the visor on a clean cloth, gently bend it and carefully remove the lens.
Step 2: Check the visor
Before you start cleaning, check the visor and the Pinlock lens for scratches or other damage. Even small scratches can be very distracting in sunlight or at night when headlights reflect. In this case, the visor or lens should be replaced.
Step 3: Clean the visor and Pinlock
Clean the visor only with lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid. Use a soft microfibre cloth and avoid heavy rubbing. Stubborn insect residue should be soaked first rather than scraped off. Clean the Pinlock lens separately with soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before refitting.
Step 4: Remove the inner lining
Next, remove all movable parts of the inner lining. This usually includes the cheek pads, head liner and breath guard. These parts can normally be removed from the helmet without tools.
Step 5: Clean the inner lining
Never use aggressive cleaning agents or solvents. The removable pads can be washed by hand in soapy water or in a delicate/hand-wash cycle in a laundry bag. Do not use a tumble dryer. Fixed inner parts are best cleaned with a special helmet interior cleaner or a slightly damp microfibre cloth. An old toothbrush is very helpful for hard-to-reach areas. Once dry, you can use a deodorising spray if required.
Step 6: Clean the outer shell
Clean the outside of your helmet with water and mild washing-up liquid or a suitable helmet cleaner. Use a soft cloth and be especially gentle with matt helmets, as they can develop shiny marks or fine scratches. Corners, edges and ventilation openings can be cleaned well with a soft toothbrush.
Do not forget the chin strap, as it is heavily exposed to sweat, skin oils, make-up and facial creams. Seals and the visor mechanism stay supple for longer if you occasionally treat them with a little silicone oil.
Step 7: Drying and reassembly
Allow all parts to air dry and protect the helmet from direct sunlight and UV rays. Avoid using a hairdryer. If necessary, use only the cold setting and keep a safe distance, as heat can damage the helmet shell. Only reassemble the helmet once everything is completely dry.
After drying, you can optionally apply a water-repellent spray to the visor.
Practical tips
When dismantling your helmet for the first time, it can be helpful to take photos of each step to make reassembly easier. Clean your helmet regularly and gently rather than rarely and aggressively. A balaclava under the helmet helps keep the lining clean. Store your helmet in a dry place, at room temperature, with the visor slightly open so any remaining moisture can escape.
Conclusion
A clean motorcycle helmet ensures better comfort, clear vision and maximum safety. With regular care, you significantly extend the life of your helmet and start every ride with a good feeling.
