CLEANING & CARE FOR YOUR CLOTHING
So your gear stays in top condition and ready to ride
Whether you are getting back on the road after the winter break or ride all year round: not only your bike, but also your motorcycle clothing deserves a proper care routine at least once a year. Clean, well-maintained gear not only looks better, it also stays reliable for longer and protects you when it really matters.
« Regular care not only extends the life of your motorcycle clothing, but also ensures that protection, comfort and performance remain just as reliable on every ride as they were on the first day. »
LEATHER CLOTHING
So your leather looks good and lasts longer
After an intense season, you can clearly see what your leather jacket or suit has been through. Insect residue, dark marks, dust and dirt settle into the material. Before you start with the actual care, remove these residues thoroughly so the leather can breathe again.
Clean first, then care
Lightly dampen the leather with a wet cloth. Then spray on a suitable leather cleaner, such as the Nikwax Leather Cleaner. Using a soft brush, gently work the foam into the leather. On heavily soiled areas you can apply a little more pressure, but make sure the leather does not become soaked – moisture is fine, but soaking is not.
Do not forget the zips
While the cleaner is taking effect, take care of the zips. Apply a little silicone spray to a soft cloth and gently rub the zips. They will run smoothly again and stay that way for longer.
Remove the dirt and enjoy the result
After the application time, take a soft microfibre cloth and wipe off the foam thoroughly, removing the loosened dirt at the same time. The leather already looks much better, but there is still one final step.
Care and protection for the leather
Freshly cleaned leather benefits from extra care. Massage a high-quality leather balm, for example from Richa, evenly into the material using a soft sponge. Optionally, you can then apply a waterproofing product such as the Nikwax Leather Restorer. This keeps the leather supple, protects the pores and helps water bead off in the rain. Finally, wipe away any excess with a soft cloth.
Gloves and boots need care too
Do not forget that leather gloves, boots and shoes also need regular care. It is especially beneficial to treat them not only on the outside, but also on the inside, using products designed specifically for leather.
TEXTILE CLOTHING
To keep the membrane and comfort intact
Textile jackets and trousers are true all-rounders, but they also need regular care. To preserve the membrane, protection and comfort, a thorough clean is especially worthwhile towards the end of the season after many miles.
Why washing is so important
Over time, dirt and dust build up on the outside, while salt residue from sweat remains on the inside. Both can cause the membrane to lose its function and reduce breathability.
How to wash textile clothing properly
In most cases, you can wash textile motorcycle clothing at 30 °C in the washing machine. Always check the manufacturer’s care label first. Just as important is the right detergent: climate membranes are sensitive and require special products such as Nikwax Tech Wash. Avoid normal detergent and fabric softener.
Preparation before washing
Before washing, remove the thermal lining and wash it separately. Also remove the protectors and refit them only after everything is dry. Close all zips, Velcro fastenings and buttons to reduce friction and protect the material.
Drying correctly
After washing, check the care label again. If tumble drying is allowed, you can use a dryer. If not, simply hang the jacket and trousers up and allow them to air dry slowly. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators, as these can damage the material. Once everything is dry, refit the protectors and linings.
Aftercare and waterproofing
Finish with aftercare. If zips no longer run smoothly, apply a little silicone spray to a soft cloth and wipe them. This will keep them working smoothly and reliably. Reproofing your textile clothing is especially important. Even with a membrane, good waterproofing helps prevent water from soaking into the fabric, allows the jacket to dry faster and keeps it cleaner for longer.
You can use a classic waterproofing spray or, even easier, Nikwax TX-Direct Wash-In, which is added directly in the washing machine and distributes itself evenly.
A little care always pays off
With the right care, your motorcycle clothing lasts much longer, remains functional and still looks good after many miles. Investing a little time once a year rewards you with reliable gear and greater comfort on every ride.
