Finding the Right Material
With the right motorcycle clothing, you can ride safely and comfortably as a beginner. Below you will find some helpful tips to support you in choosing your first set of motorcycle gear.
Apart from the helmet, your riding gear is the only protection you have in the event of a fall. This makes the choice of the right material especially important for new riders. At the beginning, two key questions usually arise: Textile or leather? One-piece or two-piece?

Motorcycle Clothing: Textile or Leather?
Protection and comfort are the most important factors when choosing the right motorcycle clothing. Of course, for many riders, appearance also plays a key role. When searching for the right material, you will sooner or later be faced with the question:
Textile or leather? Personal opinions and preferences vary. To help you decide, we present the key characteristics of both materials and show you what to look out for when making your purchase.
Textile Motorcycle Clothing: Comfortable, Functional and Everyday-Friendly
Textile motorcycle clothing is very comfortable, as it is lightweight, multi-layered and well ventilated. Textile jackets and trousers have a slightly looser fit, which also makes them comfortable to wear off the bike. The downside of this wider cut is that the protectors can shift more easily, which may slightly reduce their protective performance. To ensure optimal protection, a closer-fitting cut should therefore always be chosen.
One of the advantages of textile clothing is that motorcycle jackets and trousers can be worn over everyday clothes. However, wearing suitable base layers is recommended for better comfort. Easy-care textile riding gear protects against wind and rain thanks to waterproof materials and can be well ventilated in summer via zip openings. If you tend to sweat quickly in warm temperatures, a textile jacket is an excellent choice. For frequent riders, an all-season jacket is recommended, as removable linings allow it to be worn flexibly throughout the year.
Leather Motorcycle Clothing: Safe and Aerodynamic on the Road
Leather motorcycle clothing is available as a one-piece suit or as a two-piece combination consisting of leather trousers and a leather jacket. The greatest advantage of the natural material leather is its high abrasion resistance. However, leather riding gear must fit snugly against the body – like a second skin – as only then can it provide optimal protection in the event of a fall. Thanks to the close fit, the protectors remain in the correct position, which further increases safety.
Because of the weight of the material, leather clothing is slightly heavier and only limited in terms of breathability and waterproofing – although there has been significant development in recent years. Modern leather gear can now keep you dry even in heavy rain, and special perforations improve ventilation. One important point to remember: leather clothing must always be well and carefully maintained so that it does not lose its protective qualities or wearing comfort.
Motorcycle Clothing: One-Piece or Two-Piece?
Sporty one-piece suits that fit closely, create very little air resistance and do not move out of place are a very safe option for more experienced and performance-oriented riders. However, a one-piece suit is not recommended as your very first set of gear, as it can feel uncomfortable at first and needs time to be worn in before it fits properly. For beginners, it is more important to feel comfortable in their clothing so they can fully focus on the bike and the road.
If you enjoy touring with breaks off the bike or use your motorcycle for commuting, you will benefit from a two-piece combination. Two-piece outfits can also be worn comfortably off the bike and often offer practical pockets for keys and your wallet. No matter which option you choose, good visibility is an incredibly important factor when riding. Bright colours and motorcycle clothing with reflective elements make a significant contribution to a safer, accident-free ride.
Important When Buying Motorcycle Clothing: The Complete Kit
When purchasing your first set of motorcycle gear, it is important to remember that your equipment does not only include a jacket, trousers and a helmet. Gloves, boots and a kidney belt are just as essential. With a complete kit, you can ride both comfortably and safely. We are happy to advise you on choosing the right full set of gear, including available D3O protectors and airbag systems. Every item of motorcycle clothing from Mototrend complies with EU safety standards.
Make Sure Everything Fits: Take Your Time to Try It On
It is important to take your time when trying on motorcycle clothing. Test several models and sit on a motorcycle to notice any uncomfortable creases, as well as to check the position of the protectors and the fit of the collar when leaning forward on the bike. Our knowledgeable advisors bring many years of experience and are happy to take the time to help you find your ideal first set of motorcycle gear.
